Kolb (1984), in introducing the idea of the experiential learning cycle and of learning styles, defines learning as the process whereby "knowledge is created through the transformation of expertise".(Fisher 2001:121) He suggests that ideas are not fixed but are formed and modified through current and past experiences. His discovering cycle consists of four stages; accomplishing each stage is significant to advance discovering in the next stage:

Active Experimentation (The learner actively uses the ideas formed and furthermore tries them in new situations. The last mentioned takes him back to the start of the cycle. )

-Concrete know-how (The learner is encouraged to become engaged in new experiences.)

-Reflective Observation (The learner contemplate on his know-how from different perspective. Enough time and supportive feedback is cooperative in this stage.)

- Abstract Conceptualisation (The learner forms ideas and logical theories.) (Yate 2003:10)

Kolb states the blend of all four discovering forms produces the largest grade of discovering by permitting more mighty and adaptive types of discovering to emerge. But still, there is the hazard of labelling people as 'theorists' or 'pragmatists' whereas most persons display more than one powerful preference.
