Introduction

It is known that rest and immobility involve a significant number of complications: skin, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, muscle, and joint, bone, digestive, urinary, psychological and social. The occurrence of these problems will depend basically on: the duration OF bedridden, amount of immobility, the disease process, and age. Mobility aids are various assistive devices used in the home to improve patient mobility and protect the patient/family/caregiver(s) from injury when patients are moved or repositioned. Proper use of mobility aids involves education of patients and caregivers, which is essential because improper use of mobility aids can injure the patient/family member/caregivers or result in an accident. In this paper I will consider the nursing practice for safe mobility of a patient who has recently operated both knees and use Zimmer frame for motor functionalities. The paper will discuss certain strategies that are pivotal for improvement in mobility after the operation.

The desired outcome of using a Zimmer frame is to reduce the patient/family/caregiver risk for injury when using the mobility aid or when assisting the patient with the mobility aid; patient education on the use of these mobility aids is important to ensure the proper use.

Nursing Practices for the Patient

Instructing a patient/family/caregiver on the correct use of a mobility aid is an important part of patient/family/caregiver safety.

Educate the patient/family/caregiver about avoiding use of the mobility aid when feeling drowsy or fatigued. Review with the patient/family/caregiver medications that may make the patient drowsy.

Teach the patient/ family/caregiver about the importance of routine maintenance and repair for mobility aids.

For wheelchairs, highlight the importance of ensuring that wheels are properly oiled and nuts and bolts are secured tightly.

Assess the patient/family/caregiver level of anxiety about using a mobility aid and provide emotional support, as needed.
