Ethics and Decision Making in Health Care

Applications

The standards of ethical practice and health care decision making are essential and important in the health care services delivery. This study of health care decision making in relation to the ethical practice is undoubtedly, a major concern and is a subject of discussion in ethics, is related to the adequate and equitable distribution of resources to gain access to health services throughout the American population. It deals with the principle of justice that is beyond the purely clinical field hospital ethics and expands the economy, politics and social situations that affect the communities that make up the country.

Decision making in health care in relation to ethics is required when the health care executive balance the interests and needs of the society, organization and individual. Those who involved in the process of decision making must think about the ethical principles such as autonomy, fairness, justice and beneficence as well as the professional ethical practice codes and standards in health care services delivery. Numerous factors have contributed to the increasing concern in the health care organizations with the ethical issues that include issues of affordability and access, mergers and acquisitions, stress to reduce costs, financial constraints and other resource constraints and advancements in the medical technology that make difficult the decision making. The executives of health care have a duty to address the increasing number of intricate dilemmas of ethics they are confronting of, but they cannot and should not make such decisions alone or without the framework for the sound decision making.

The health care organizations should have a medium that should include the ethics consultation services, ethics committees for the course of dealing with the prospective disagreement of interest or written procedures and policies to help out the executives of health care with the ethical process of decision making. With such mechanisms, at times contradictory interests of caregivers, payors, families, patients, the organization and the community can be fittingly balanced and weighed (Beauchamp, 2008).
