Protection in Cyber Space

Introduction

With the increase in information and technology, a number of conveniences have been created and at the same time a large number of issues have also emerged, that are now in immediate need of a solution. One of the major discoveries of all times and the greatest product of modern technological development is the World Wide Web (WWW), which has not only connected the world but has also assisted in converting it in a global village. All the information and knowledge of the world is now just a click away, which is no doubt a positive aspect of World Wide Web, but the problem arises when the right information is mixed up with the wrong one, and the security issues and concerns are raised. This research would deal with the methodological framework for the protection of children and family in cyberspace in the Sultanate of Oman, and would present the literature review and theoretical framework of the topic as well.

Problem Statement

The increase in the use of Information and Technology has also given rise to the number of security threats, resulting in a situation where privacy invasion and identity threat are a commonplace. It is eminent to mention here that due to increase in convenience and ease offered by modern technology, an increasing number of children are now involved in the use of internet and being immature, they are highly vulnerable to cyber security threats (Ghosh and Turrini, 2010, Pp: 201). The increasing number of cyber crimes and cyber security threats now call for the concerned authorities to introduce some security measures, which do not only ensure cyber security but also make sure that the security issues are resolved to ensure safe and secure cyber space usage.

The statistics obtained from the General Census of Population in 2012 have shown that 33% of the population of Oman is composed of children between age group 0 and 14, and the same is proved by the number of school going children. Given the large scale use of technology in the Sultanate of Oman, this implies that 33% of the population is under continuous threat of cyber space invasion and other related issues, and thus needs an immediate and plan is need to protect children as well as families from the threats and issues posed by the unsafe use of cyber space. It is eminent to mention here that different angles and aspects of the issue have to be analyzed in order to ensure that the issue is properly highlighted and addressed, thus assisting in finding a solution to the problems.

Research Questions

The major research questions proposed for this study are:

What are the possible solutions to the cyber security issue of faced by the Sultanate of Oman these days?

What methodologies are needed to implement these measures and to which extent they would assist in minimizing the cyber security threats?

Research Objectives

The major objectives of the research include:
