Each year in the United States, newer prescription medications make their way into pharmacies aimed at better alleviating the symptoms of many psychiatric illnesses. The society's current relationship with these drugs is not good one as they cast negative impact on the human health. The relationship of these drugs with the people of society is not very healthy one as it indicates that the health prospects of the people is not very good and that they are suffering from one or more psychological ailments. The role that pharmaceutical companies play by providing range of drugs cannot be categorized as only beneficial or only negative. There are various aspects of their role and cannot be justified as beneficial or negative. At some point, these pharmaceutical companies play a vital role in curing the severe ailments of the people suffering from psychological ailments while sometimes the drugs these pharmaceutical companies provide prolong the patient's ailment and have side effects that enhance the disease instead of curing it completely.

History of Prozac

The history of Prozac is not very long as it was invented back in 1988 by the American pharmaceutical company. The drug Prozac was first introduced in January 1988 in the markets. After two years of its invention, the drug was quite common to be prescribed by most of the doctors. The biochemical name of the drug Prozac is fluoxetine hydrochloride. It is the most recent drug within the new class of anti-depressants that is called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Currently it is the most prescribed anti depressant among the psychologists. Ray fuller was the person behind the invention of Prozac who discovered the team of inventors. Ray Fuller received the award for the Pharmaceutical Discoverer for noticing the anti depressant Prozac or fluoxetine. Brian Molloy and David Wong were also awarded for the invention of Prozac that are the team members of the Eli Lily Company (Bach, 2007).

Effects on nervous System

As the Prozac is a new product in the recently emerged class of anti-depressants called the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, the prolong use of the drug might affects the nervous system badly. The Prozac works through increasing the secretion of neurotransmitters on the serotonin that increases the capability of brain to feel better. If this anti depressant is used actively for long period of time, it may modify this natural process of the human body. Due to this, instead of curing the disease and helping the patient to maintain his daily activities normally, it may change his mind set and made the person to feel aggressive (Bach, 2007).

The effects of Prozac on the nervous system are not very good. Currently being the best anti depressant in the market, it is widely used by the patients suffering from severe depression.
