Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic of this research is related to the Psychiatry. The purpose of this project is to assess the benefits of the use of the Overt Aggressive Screening Tool in the emergency department as indicative of preventive intervention and providing treatment before the behavior becomes violent either in the emergency department or when patients are admitted to medicine or psychiatric units.

Background of the Study

There are numerous causes, which can make the patient to become violent, aggressive or destructive while in the emergency department. Usually, the most important cause of this violent or aggressive behavior is the presence of the co morbid substance abuse, intoxication and dependence. In psychiatric patients, the process of the disease may create itself delusions and hallucinations, which may aggravate the violent behavior. Aggression can be of many types like physical aggression towards the objects, vocal aggression, physical aggression towards the people or physical aggression in direction of oneself. The two important activities have been increasingly renowned within the range or extent of the emergency medicine. The purpose of this study is to recognize and provide the treatment and to prevent the intervention of the psychiatric patients in emergency unit (Tyson, 2002).

The major target of the government is the long term management of the violent behavior. This has become the major purpose of all for the development of the mental health and psychiatric patients. This specifically requires the proper and effective tools in the emergency units or psychiatric departments to evaluate the risks related to the violent behaviors, to ensure the safety and to manage individuals who are violent and disturbed. The efficient treatment before the violent behavior of the patients is a way of helping to reduce the risk of harm to the individual (Tyson, 2002).
