Qualitative research goes under several sobriquets, such as the humanistic model of social research, unobtrusive methods and ethnographic approaches. 'Qualitative research' is the preferred term for most people. It is a term used to describe an approach to research than stresses 'quality' not 'quantity', that is, social meanings rather than the collection of numerate statistical data (Fischer, 2005).
