Aim

The aim of this research is to investigate why some residents in Newham recycle and why others do not recycle.

Objectives

To establish why recycling is important in Newham Borough.

Obtain an insight into residents of Newham Borough opinions of recycling.

Investigate how Newham Residents recycle and how often they do if they recycle.

Find out the benefits of recycling.

Introduction

United Kingdom is one of those regions with highest diversity of people and problems. Recycling is just to name one of them. Recycling is considered one of the problems in the eyes of administration that needs to be addressed at both the micro and macro level. It is necessary to consider the reasons why people are not inclined to recycling when there is gain in both, the individual and collective level. Newham is one of the six hosts for Olympics 2012. The eyes of the entire world will be on the venue. However, Newham has the second last position, in terms of recycling rates (The Times, 2005). This has led us to this research that is an attempt to find out the attitudes of residents of Newham towards recycling.

Literature Review

Recycling has seen a mushroom growth all over the globe in recent years, including UK. The proportion of recycling paper, plastic and glass has been doubled since 2001. A research conducted in 2007 revealed that, three quarters of people said to have been recycling materials through door step collection. The research further revealed the attitude and behaviour of the general public towards recycling. 81% people said that it is a duty of the public to recycle the waste. Fifty two per cent of the people agreed to the statement that, those, who recycle all they can should be rewarded and those who do not should be penalized. While those who disagreed with this statement, were only 24%.

If the recycling behaviour is dissected into types of material being recycled, it is found that, in 2007, 88% recycling was that of paper. Recycled paper can be utilized in numerous ways, including making it paper again. Eighty per cent of the glass was recycled. Sixty eight per cent cans and tin, while cardboard was recycled only 60 per cent. It was further revealed in this study that people were mostly recycling through doorstep collection service rather than taking the material to recycle. The materials in the research study which received the lowest recycling percentage were food items and clothes with 19 per cent and 34% respectively.
