A Reflection on Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Abstract

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is syndrome that appears in lungs due to the severe infection, improper breathing conditions, or some other reason that directly affect the system of the body (Ware & Matthay, 2000). In this syndrome, the patient may experience breathlessness and inflammation in the chest. In this assignment, the reflection cycle of Gibbs is used to investigate the conditions of the patient suffering from ARDS. Further, conclusions are derived and the analysis is done according to the conditions of the patient. Treatments are recommended analyzing the researches done in the past and Recommendations for Practice in ICU are also provided.

Reflection on Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Introduction

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is also known as the Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It can be defined as disorder or the failure of lungs (pulmonary). It can arise from any type of disease that will result in the collection of or accumulation of large amounts of fluid in the lungs. ARDS cannot be defined as a disease itself but it is a type of syndrome or the group of symptoms that will result in respiratory failure ultimately. It can develop all of a sudden to a person and doesn't require time. It can also affect the lungs of a person whose respiratory system have been working normal in the past (Ware & Matthay, 2000). ARDS can be defined as the medical emergency in the real terms. The basic reason for the syndrome is the breakdown of the membrane that is responsible for keeping the fluid away or separated from leaking out of the small blood vessels that are present in the lungs into the breathing sacs (the alveoli).

The reflection cycle of Gibbs consists of the modification of the experiential plan of Kolb's that comprises of a structured frame work in the form of levels or the stages. In order to apply the reflections on Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome certain stages are followed that are expressed in Gibbs Cycle.

Description

The patient was followed by many problems relating the breathing issues. The patient is suffering from many problems like sudden breathlessness within few hours. The patient reported the problem increased within 48 hours. The patient followed up by critical sickness and fever as well. Due to less provision of oxygen to the brain, the patient was also suffering from confusion and stress.

Further the patient explained the following conditions he has been experiencing that were the outcomes of the clinical examination.

Shortness of breath

Difficulty breathing

Low blood pressure

Rapid breathing
