Relationship between Athletes and Religion

Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

Since ancient times, Athletics has become firmly established in human life. Athletics have become an integral part of its social and cultural sides. It has long been no strangers to the Athletics were also political and economic overtones. Religion is the belief that supernatural forces influence human lives. From the foregoing definitions, the author sees religion as the belief in the existence and worship of a supreme power that controls our acts (Creswell, 2005). On the other hand, Athletics is defined as sport competition (between individuals or teams) that covers a large number of tests that can take place indoors or outdoors. The main disciplines of athletics can be grouped in the following categories: racing, running, throwing and jumping. The races, are ranging from the 50 meter dash (held indoors) to the marathon, covering 42.195 kilometers.

In the United States and Great Britain distances are expressed in miles, but since 1976, official records are only recognized metric distances (except for the mile race). In Europe and the Olympics, the distances are always expressed in meters. Meetings of outdoor athletics are usually held at a stadium in central space which is a track, whose floor is ash, clay or synthetic material. The usual length of the track is 400 m, has an oval shape with two lines and two curves. Most of the throws and jumps (called field tests) occur in the zone inside the oval. There are special disciplines, such as the decathlon (men only), which consists of five track and field five, which consists of four field tests and three runs (Storch, & Okun, 2008).

Purpose/Aim

Religion and Athletics go hand in hand for a long time. In this paper we will discuss how faith in God helps athletes to win, to overcome difficulties, helps to believe in himself when it seems, there is no chance. This paper also discusses the importance religion for athletes; overall this paper contains relationship between athletes and religion. This study will illustrate the importance of religion in sports especially to athletes.

Rationale

The fundamental reason for this study is that as of right now, there is no clear cut answer of religions' roll in Athletes. Relationship between religion and athletes is such an interesting paradox because nobody likes to be imposed upon. Yet children say the pledge of allegiance everyday in school and use the phrase “under god,” sports teams all over the country say prayers before and after games, and Tim Tebow recites bible verses on national television. These are all much larger issues than Tebow himself. Why should he be held accountable for the role of religion outside of church, the relationship between church and state, or the role of religion in sports He shouldn't be. It's just interesting how he has brought these issues to the table and he's done it the best possible way. He is the epitome of good healthy debate.
