Abstract

The relationship between community and corporate sector has gained importance in recent years in both organisational theory and practice. While there still exists a lack of clarity on what constitutes corporate sustainability and how towards best achieve it, many scholars suggest that the pathway for the adoption of corporate sustainability principles leads via the adoption of a sustainability-oriented organisational culture. In this paper, we provide a closer examination of this suggested link between the cultural orientation of an organisation and the pursuit of corporate sustainability principles. Specifically, we seek towards assess (1) what constitutes a sustainability-oriented organisational culture, (2) whether it is possible for organisations towards display a unified sustainability-oriented organisational culture, and (3) whether organisations can become more sustainable across culture change. Directions and challenges for practical management and future research are identified and outlined.

The community and corporate sector is, in this definition, integrally linked to the social, ecological, political, and economic impacts that derive from the company's business model; how the company actually does business in the societies where it operates; and how it handles its responsibilities to stakeholders and the natural environment. The community and corporate sector relationship is also associated with the rights and responsibilities granted to a company or organisation by engaging governments where the enterprise operates; just as individual citizenship carries rights and responsibilities, however, companies have considerably more resources and power than do majority individuals and do not have the right to vote (Andriof, 2001, pp: 21).

While CSR has historically referred towards a company's economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary responsibilities, community and corporate sector emphasizes the integral responsibilities attendant towards a company's strategies and practices. There are other definitions of community and corporate sector, but they are generally consistent with the theme of integrating social, ecological, and stakeholder responsibilities into ...
