Introduction

The first party system ranged from 1796 to 1816. George Washington proved to be a unifying presence, during the initial eight years of the nation's government and existence. Soon after he stepped down through retirement, the nation was divided into camps opposing each other and formed along ideological guidelines. These two camps would go down in history as the nation's two original political parties, the Federalists and Republicans.
