Research Assignment

What are the problem, purpose, and question of this study?

The problem mentioned in this research is about substance abuse, the problem of substance abuse is prevailing among adults due to various reasons as they get influenced by others. The purpose of this research is to examine the factors due to which adolescents participate in follow up for substance abuse treatment program. Similarly, this program also analysis the factors as to how this treatment program can improve the treatment practices for substance abuse in adolescence. This shows their willingness towards the treatment program for substance abuse. The question for the study is to analyze the reasons for adult participation in treatment programs. Furthermore, it also helps to examine the attitudes of adolescents in participation.

Discuss the sample, limitations, informed consent, ethical considerations and use of an IRB.

The sample consisted of adolescents who had agreed to participate in evaluation of outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment program. The study sample composed of 145 adolescents out of 151. These participants were male 74% and belonged to single parent family. Most of the participants were male (74%), Caucasian (79%), between the ages of 16 and 17 (58%), and met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for cannabis dependence (54%), cannabis abuse (30%), and/or alcohol abuse (28%). 2% of these adolescents involved in child welfare agency.

Informed consent

It is an important component of research and is an integral part of the research process. Researchers should educate their participants in order for them to make an informed decision regarding their participation in the research (Brody, 2000). Participants must provide informed consent freely and without force and with clear comprehension of what participation entails. For the proposed study, the researcher implemented practical steps to ensure that all participants educated about the proposed study for the treatment program in order to make an informed decision. Participation was voluntary, and individuals were given the right to choose not to participate or to withdraw from either phase of the proposed study at any time.

Ethical Consideration

In addition to obtaining a signed consent form prior to conducting the study; the researcher would take steps to make sure that “genuine, informed consent” granted by the adolescent. To accomplish this objective, information regarding the nature of the study would be presented prior to conducting the interview. Additionally, the adolescents participating in the study would be informed that a debriefing session would be held at the end of the interview to allow the participant to reflect on their answers and clarify anything that they believe might be inaccurate or incomplete. At any time prior to the submission of this research project, the participant has the right to rescind permission to use their interview in the study. If this occurs, the research would not be used for the study, digitally recorded data would be erased and consent forms would be shredded (Call, 1982). A replacement participant would be sought to complete the study using the sampling method described above.
