The impact of Tourism on Indigenous Community

Research Question

How have they adapted to tourism activities in their community?

Literature Review

As the world is moving towards the formation of a global village, a number of factors are becoming increasingly essential for the survival of communities and nations, with tourism being one of them. Tourism is not only essential for economy of nations but also contributes development of the positive as well as constructive image of the country across the globe. It has been noticed that different communities and countries react to tourism differently; this study would focus on the reaction of indigenous individuals in Amantaní and Taquile Islands towards tourism and the results of their responses and reactions.

Although tourism holds extreme and utmost importance in enhancing the economy of any country, it is often overlooked by the government and the concerned authorities because of the lack of direct impact placed by this industry (West, 2008, Pp: 112). Moreover, the extent to which the local community can adjust to promote tourism also plays its part in determining the number of tourists attracted by the country and thus the extent of support gained by the economy through tourism. It is eminent to mention here that because of the sheer importance and significance of the issue, a large number of studies have been conducted on the topic and it has been widely discussed and debated on the international forums.

Different countries have been suing different tactics and techniques to attract tourists, which include the use of postcards, promotional literature and presentation of excellent and outstanding facilities for the tourists (Sharpley, 2008, Pp: 253). Tourism has led to the creation of consumer culture, in which any individual, who can afford the luxury, can go to any area or place offering exotic sights and cultural representation. However, the indigenous people often have to suffer as a result, because various tactics used by the tourists might be harmful for the ecology as well as the ecosystem of the areas. The Amantaní and Taquile Islands are located in Peru, and for the indigenous people over there, the introduction of tourism is presenting immense opportunities for the economic growth combined with the chances of increase in education and the increased standard of living. However, it is also threatening the character defining elements of the culture and identity of the indigenous individuals and thus both the positive as well as negative characters have to be considered before moving on to the promotion of tourism. Studies show that the recent years have seen more development in the recent years in tourism industry the positive effects are slowly taking over the negative ones (Holden, 2008, Pp: 152. The principles on the sustainable development reveal that the concept of sustainable tourism aims at preserving the physical as well as environmental conditions of the tourist areas and inn addition, it also seeks to make contribution to the economic as well as socio-cultural attributes of the host communities.
