Background

In this paper I will consider the implication of human pharmaco-metabolomics by the demonstration of a clear connection between the metabolic fate of the structured dose of analgesic acetaminophen and the predose urinary metabolite. Metabolites are small molecules that are chemically transformed during metabolism and, as such, they provide a functional readout of cellular state. Unlike genes and proteins, the functions of which are subject to epigenetic regulation and post-translational modifications, respectively, metabolites serve as direct signatures of biochemical activity and are therefore easier to correlate with phenotype.
