Research Proposal

Proposed area of Research

The research will investigate into the mechanism through which the human recombinant erythropoietin (rHuEPO) modulates the glycoaminoglycan turnover in a porcine explants mode of rheumatoid arthritis dependent on nitric oxide synthase (NOS).

Aims and Focus

The study will focus on developing a model that can be used to study the mechanism that is adopted by the human body in order to modulate the levels of glycoaminoglycan in the human body suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. A porcine explants model will be developed in order to study the mechanism through which this function is performed and then deductions will be drawn for the working in the human body. The study will help patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis by helping researchers in the medical field to develop recombinant erythropoietin for patient that maintains suitable levels of glycoaminoglycan.

Professional Context

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease which affects the synovial joints by attacking their specialized tissues called synovium. The joints in the hand and feet are largely affected by Rheumatoid arthritis. The disease works spreads in a systematic way and affects both sides of the body at the same time and with the same rate. This disease can spread and affect almost every synovial joint in the human body including the human heart and lungs.

As many as 400,000 people are suffering from RA in the United Kingdom. Currently the incidence ratio is relatively low for the disease, ranging from around 1.5 men and 3.6 women getting affected from the disease per 10,000 people living in the country. This statistic shows that every year almost 12,000 people get affected from the consequences of RA. Women are two times more likely to suffer from RA than men. This disease usually strikes in the old age around 70s for both men and women. However, there are always chances for young and adults to develop the symptoms of the disease.

RA does not only affect the human population of the country but it has adverse affects on the economic viability of the United Kingdome. Around 1/3rd of the people leave work after developing the condition for two years. However, the rate of people quitting work increases with the complications arising from old age. This results in negatively affecting the economic progress of the country as the experienced class is no longer present in the industry. RA alone has a direct cost of between 3.8 to 4.75 billion pounds for the United Kingdom (NICE 2009, p4-5). Therefore, this disease needs to be countered in order to help the people who are suffering as well as the affects that it has on the economy of the country.

Kidney is among the most vital organs in the human body and weighs almost 100-160 grams depending on the age and health profile of a patient. Generally the size of the clenched fist is exactly the same as that of a kidney. Kidneys perform the important function of ridding the body from volumes of body waste and maintain a healthy ...
