How effective is cognitive behavioral therapy, as a treatment for chronic lower back pain?

Introduction

The main study topic of this study is the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to cure lower back pain. Lower back pain is common ailment amongst many people in today's world. There are many factors that lead to the development of pain in the lower back region. This leads to the patient seeking cure to the problem and use many ways of getting therapies. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can assist a lot of people in dealing with chronic back pain (Otis, 2007). CBT is a way of psychological therapy that comprises of several meetings with a therapist. The therapy involves thoughts which is the cognitive part and actions that are the behavior part of the therapy (Hayes, et.al, 2004). The initial part of the therapy involves the understanding of the patient's thoughts and feelings that happen when there is back pain. Then the therapist assists the patient in transforming those thoughts into useful and healthy actions. The shift from negative to positive can help control the pain. The rationale behind this therapy is that changing the mindset about pain can affect the way that our bodies react to pain. The physical pain that a person experiences cannot be stopped, but with training a patient can get a grip over the pain (Bermann, 2009, p.267-274). There are three behavioral approaches that can be differentiated in general namely: operant, cognitive, and respondent, but are usually used together to treat cases. Lower back pain is a big health and economic issue amongst the people in the developed western countries. Chronic low back pain is a specific reason for medical expenditures, absenteeism and disability (Ekman et.al, 2005, p.1777-1785). There are many therapies that can be used to cure chronic low back pain. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the treatment of lower back pain which is one of the ailments that people develop due to various reasons (Ashby, 2010, p.232-243).

1.1 Literature Review

This is a study of the part of cognitive behavioral help (CBT) in the administration of lower back pain.
