Applications of RFID

Introduction

In telecommunications, electronic RFID (or Radio Frequency Identification or Identification radio frequency) is a technology for the identification and / or automatic data storage of objects, animals or people (AIDC Identifying and Automatic Data Capture) based on the capacity of data storage by particular electronic devices (called tags or transponders) and on the ability to respond to these '"interrogation" at a distance by special apparatuses fixed or portable for simplicity called "readers" (in reality they are also "writers") to radio communicating (or updating) the information contained therein. In a certain sense can be therefore assimilated to systems of "reading and / or writing" without wires with numerous applications.

Discussion

Advantages of RFID over bar codes and magnetic stripes

RFID technology has some advantages over traditional simple technology of bar codes and magnetic stripes:

It should not be in contact to be read as magnetic stripes

Must not be visible to be read as bar codes

You can also add information about the chip depending on the type of chip (Read Only: You can only read the information, Write Once, Read Many: You can write to the chip information only once, but read an unlimited number of times, Read and Write: You can read and store information for a limited number of times but great)

The identification and verification occur in 1/10 of a second

The communication can be clear or encrypted

RFID applications

Passport

The tags are used in RFID passports in different countries. The first country to adopt RFID passports ("e-passports") was the government Malay in 1998. Such passports, the chip contains information in addition to the passport of the casino and the history of the use (date, day and places) for all entries and exits from the country.

The tag RFID is used in the new British and American passports since 2006. The United States has issued 10 million passports in 2005 and expectations are for 13 million in 2006. The chip will store the same information printed on the passport and will also include a digital photograph of the owner. The passports will also contain a thin metal membrane in order to make it difficult for the unauthorized reading (skimming) when the passport is closed.

Electronic Money

Visa, MasterCard and American Express are launching new credit cards for security, speed and flexibility than traditional Chip Card More than 10 million Americans, Japanese and English are using, on a regional basis, those solutions. In New York you can pay the ticket for the subway with these solutions.

In Italy there are currently several pilot projects including: Post pay Post mobile, which implements the Pay Pass MasterCard, TELLCARD, a pre-paid credit card with pay Wave Visa and ATA Hotel (which already manages two of the technology most important villages: Tanka Village and Gardens Naxos). The technology used is a tag 13.56 MHz ISO 14443. In this area are expected futuristic main applications of Near Field Communication (NFC), which provide the combination of a NFC-enabled phone (or with an RFID read / write ...
