Abstract

This report basically explains the role of Nursing in promoting sleep in acute care settings. It significantly provides a combination of an analysis on sleep patterns, different aspects that effect sleep, and interferences in sleep in severely ill hospitalized patients. Nurses can help those patients in a lot of ways through which they can be able to get relaxed and sleep. On the other hand there are a lot of other factors e.g. psychological, environmental and physiological which can adversely influence sleep patterns. Sleep disorders are very general issues between an individual in hospital and in institutions as well. “Even though a lot of work has been done and learnt from many years concerning sleeping problems but even now there are a lot of questions for more consideration. Some of the studies which has been done addressing acute care settings has been considering from several past years.”(Redeker, 2000)

This research article explains some of the convincing phases that a nurse can adopt to facilitate patient in rest and restore to health. “Getting relaxed sleep for the patients in ICUs more specifically is very troublesome, for the reason of treatment frequency and being under consideration 24 hour. Strangely enough those patients get the least rest which are supposed to get the more”. (Potter, 2005)Significantly patients in the poor health fritter lesser time in deeper than in lighter stage, which is the most invigorating phase of sleep cycle. “Decline in stress and pain and encouraging the easing reaction may results in improving sleep. Drugs can also affect patients sleep, some of them can elevate it but can effect adversely as well”. (Missildine, 2008). “Environment can also be the reason of being disturbance for ill patients in acute care settings. Eventually disturbance in surrounding can elevate stress, pain, anxiety and can effect rigorously. In order to keep the synchronization in hormonal cycle, sound sleep is very necessary”.
