Introduction

According to the Oxford dictionary of present English, a tragedy is recounted as a serious catastrophe or a miserable event. In Shakespeare performances, tragedy is recognised as a article that ends unhappily due to the drop of the protagonist, which is the tragic hero. For a play to be a tragedy, there must be a tragic hero. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is the tragic hero. The topic of tragedy performances a large function in the play Romeo and Juliet. By investigating Romeo's tragic flaw, his noble birth, his series of poor conclusions, the pain of Romeo that expands beyond himself, it is apparent that Romeo and Juliet is classified as a tragedy.

Aindividual should posses certain qualities that classify one as a tragic hero. One of these features is the noble birth of a character. In the play Romeo and Juliet Romeo being the tragic champion, possesses that quality. Romeo is a Montague, and in the city of Verona the Montagues are a well renowned and highly regarded family. It is a renowned detail that the Montagues are of noble birth when it is said by Benvolio in Act 1, view 1, Line 141: 'My noble uncle.' Benvolio is mentioning to Lord Montague, who is the father of Romeo. The Montagues are furthermore a wealthy family, and that is one of the causes for the esteem for Romeo. 'Verona brags of him... abears him like a partially gentleman.' This was said by Lord Capulet in proceed 1, view 5, Lines 65-66. This extract illustrates that even Romeo's foes know well of him and understand that he is respected and conversed about by the citizens of Verona. Usually when a feature is introduced as being noble, the assembly is cognizant that in the end of the play, the feature will have a tragic fall.

Another necessary quality owned by a tragic champion is the hero's tragic flaw, which in Romeo's case is dropping in love too rapidly and deeply. 'To request a tragic flaw in either Romeo or Juliet is a foolish and futile.' - remarks Harold Goddard, a critic from the publication: ' Modern critical outlooks, William Shakespeare the Tragedies.' Goddard supports the concept that having a tragic flaw is a part of being a tragic hero. Another critic states that ' if Romeo's feature does have a tragic flaw, it is youthful impetuosity; an older or more premeditated man might somehow have organised to avoid the quarrel and would not hurry to kill himself as soon as he accepted that Juliet was dead.'
