Sam Houston-The Man of Destiny

Samuel Houston was a statesman, a politician and a remarkable figure in the history of the USA. Sam Houston grew up on the border of Tennessee in the 1790's and early 1800. He was a restless young man who had spent much of his childhood with the Cherokee Indians. He joined the Army and his services to Andrew Jackson in the war against the Creek tribe (The Red Stick War) made him a hero.

Born in Virginia, Houston is one of the most important figures in the history of Texas. He was first elected the president of Texas, but when Texas joined the confederation he also served as the senator and governor of the state of Texas. Although, Houston was a proponent of slave ownership and oppose of abolitionism movement but his passions led him to Unionist bloc. He refused to pledge loyalty to the Confederacy of the USA when Texas seceded from the Union. This brought him in a position to surrender his powers and duties as Governor of Texas. Houston immigrated to Tennessee, in his early life. He spent a lot of time with the Cherokee Nation (which he adopted and married a woman). During the war of 1812 he led from the front and his strategy was very successful in favor of Tennessee. The brilliance of Houston can be gauged from the fact that he is the only person in the history of the USA to have served as the governor of two different states. A problem and disagreement with the congress members, followed by a trial prompted him to immigrate to Texas.
