Part I Examining Your Own Family Experience

My family, culture and environment have really influenced my life and helped me grow as a responsible person. When I was about two years old, I moved from the Dominican Republic. It has influenced me tremendously because I had to learn how to adjust myself in different environments. I also had to deal with the various situations that helped me build self-confidence. Now I am always confident that I will achieve my objectives in any situation. I have a confidence to prove myself in front of others, to face all problems and take challenges in my life. Moreover now I am confident to handle any situation efficiently, and can work and live independently.

My culture and family history have influenced me to be a strong person and respect others. Respect is a key to successful life. Respect is when we are kind to people then they are kind to us. Respect is listening to the teachers and obeying our parents. I have learned to respect everyone around me. I have learned to respect human life at all ages and in all forms even if I do not like someone. Respecting my teacher has made me realize the importance of my own parents in my life. I realize and appreciate what they do for me and how they are always there for me with every step I take.

My family has also taught me to control my emotions when I am angry. When someone fouls me, I want to get up and hit him or her but I have learned to control my impulsiveness and analyze every situation calmly and rationally before reacting towards it.

What we learn through our family history helps us grow according to our customs and our traditions because it is something very close and unique. Culture makes us move through customs, traditions and practices that hold a family together and moves further on to the atmosphere we live in. What we get to know in our environment helps us survive in circumstances beyond our imagination.

In the past decade there has been a drastic down turn in the ethical and moral standards in the western world. The basic values that are taught in a traditional family are honesty, sincerity, integrity, generosity, trust, love, affection, caring, forgiveness, conservation and respect for others. It is sad to see how the parents are neglecting the little ones with such disdain. It is really sad to see how the media is portraying the traditional family values as something of the past. It is sad to note that the Hollywood with all its glamour and power is actively promoting deviant ...
