Introduction

Albany, the Capital of the state of New York, located 233 km from New York and has about 100,000 inhabitants, far less than its elder sister, which is a huge metropolis known worldwide. It located at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson, closely connected with the cities of Troy and Schenectady, thus forming the Capital District; Albany does not lack fascinating history. Indeed, it was Henry Hudson who had arrived in the region in the year 1609. This Englishman was commissioned, by the Dutch West India Company, to explore the distant lands. Ten years later, on board his ship, named Halve Maen (half moon), he landed and founded the first trading post near Albany. Nevertheless, the territory was recognized by the New Netherlands in 1624 and, there, the Dutch first established a military installation at Fort Orange (named in honor of the Prince of Orange). The village of Beverwijck was founded later in the year 1652. Finally, the British took over the region in 1664 and the village was renamed Albany. This came forth due to the future Jacques II of England, Duke of York (where New York) and the Duke of Albany to Scotland: the title was given to the youngest son of the Scottish king since 1398. Albany became a municipality in its own right in 1686 (Diana, pp.32-39).

Less than a century later, in 1754, emissaries of the seven British colonies of North America, met at a conference in Albany. It was here that Benjamin Franklin, the editor of the peace treaty for Independence, presented his first proposal for unification of the colonies in 1754. Not until the late eighteenth century, in 1797, the capital of the state of New York, was officially transferred to Albany. Far enough from New York and a bustling place, Albany is a small town full of charm. One can visit Saratoga Springs; a beautiful resort at the architecture which also includes Victorian medicinal springs. Saratoga is also known for its horse racing and the learning center of arts. The ballet in New York and the Orchestra of Philadelphia also occur every summer. If one wants to visit New York, Albany will be little more than a pleasant small step.
