The key to successful talent retention is to build cultural capital through values-based leadership. In a survey by McKinsey undertaken as part of their work on The War for Talent, culture and values was rated the highest scoring factor for talent retention among 200 executives from 77 major companies. In my opinion, cultural capital is the new frontier of competitive advantage. Organisations create cultural capital through values-based leadership.

If we refer to the model of the Seven Levels of Organisational Consciousness, values-based leaders create full-spectrum organisations. Organisations master level 1 by taking care of financial stability and employee safety. They master level 2 by focusing on open communication and customer satisfaction. They master level 3 by focusing on performance, results and best practices.

They master level 4 by focusing on adaptability, innovation, employee empowerment and continuous learning. They master level 5 by developing a cohesive culture based on a shared vision and shared values that build resilience and a strong capacity for collective action. They master level 6 by building strategic alliances with like-minded partners and providing mentoring and coaching for their managers and leaders and embracing environmental stewardship.

HR professionals are the facilitators of the process by which cultural capital is created. The CEO and all the senior directors must be the owners and drivers of the cultural capital. The CEO and senior management team have to be personally committed to building a world-class culture in order to create the conditions that attract and retain talented people. It is important to recognize that the culture of an organisation is a reflection of the personalities of the CEO and the leadership group.
