The term "sexual addiction" is used to describe the behavior of a person who has an unusually intense sex propel or an obsession with sex. Sex and the considered of sex are inclined to dominate the sex addict's considering, making it difficult to work or engage in healthy personal relationships.

The American Psychiatric Association states that sexual addiction takes on many forms and is classified into several types of behavior disorders called paraphilias including:

?Pedophilia -- an adult's sexual attraction toward children

?        Exhibitionism -- sexual exhilaration associated with exposing one's genitals in public

?        Voyeurism -- sexual exhilaration from watching an unsuspecting person

?        Sexual masochism -- sexual exhilaration from being the recipient of imposed or threatened pain

?        Sexual sadism -- sexual exhilaration from threatening or administering pain

?        Transvestic fetishism -- sexual exhilaration from wearing the apparel of the opposite sex

?        Frotteurism -- sexual exhilaration from moving or fondling an unsuspecting person

Other symptoms encompass excessive compulsive use of the internet, personal ads or 900 telephone lines for sex, consistent use of sex workers, escorts or sexual massage, multiple affairs, common sex outside of primary relationships, anonymous sex, and compulsive masturbation (Carnes, 1991).
