Sexual Orientation in Police Department

Project Title

Does sexual orientation play a role in the police officer hiring process in Honolulu police department?

Introduction

According to the topic, the role of sexual orientation has to be explained in the hiring process of Honolulu's police department. The purpose of this research is to look into the role of sexual orientation in the police hiring process. Generally, the police department believes that the sexual orientation doesn't pose any threat to the job application and entry in the police department by any candidate. The sexual orientation is not believed to affect the performance abilities of any individual along with the duties which have to be performed. There is a special area for the gays and lesbians candidates who are normally called 'Gay and Lesbian Officer Network'. This department has the role for the provision of support to its members. It also provides advices to the management on their strategies and initiatives for relationship management with the candidates and members who are gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender or belong to intersexual communities. The study will be looking whether sexual orientation plays an important role in police hiring or not. I will be looking into the sexual orientation role in the hiring process, specifically in the Honolulu Police Department. The study will also discuss the police hiring process along with its links to sexual orientation of candidates (Mieklem, 1996).

The process of police recruitment is designed to ensure the candidates that they have to meet the entry level requirements. The candidates are required to have the value and skills so that they can easily face the challenges and demands of the policing and police department. The police hiring process include online submissions of applications and related, required documents. The candidates are required to fall into the minimum requirement criteria. Next, the candidates are required to meet the designated standards which also include entry testing, aptitude and psychological screening. Pre-entry physical competency assessment comes in the next step. It is followed by attending an assessment centre which also includes interview taken by panel, a written/literacy exercise, a group activity and a presentation. Then the chosen candidates are required to have a security clearance which also includes an interview depending on the situation. After the candidates are processed through it, they have to undergo medical examination and psychological assessment. Next step is the urine analysis which is done to check illicit drug usage by the candidates. When the candidates pass the final test, they join the training session at the police colleges (Ball, 2002).
