Should Pre-K be Mandatory in the state of Mississippi?
Introduction
Mississippi is a southern state of the United States and is the only state where government supported pre-kindergarten program is not in place. Thus, Mississippi has left far behind in pre kindergarten education in comparison with other states. As a result, the national state should take into consideration this matter seriously to provide finance for to make pre kindergarten education compulsory (Russo et al., 2007). The Need for pre kindergarten education has many benefits; the most important one is teaching young children of Mississippi the necessary learning skills they need to grow socially, and developmentally; children are growing and learning every day so the earlier they start their education the better.
The need to provide more children early education in Mississippi is huge, no matter what the family income is to keep it with the pace of other southern States of the United States. The need for this pre kindergarten education is crucial to children's futures. Research shows the benefits to the child include improved readiness to learn, improved early literacy, decreased need for remedial or special education placement, and improved cognitive development. Long term, research shows a stronger likelihood to graduate from high school, improved academic confidence, and more participation in post-secondary education in Mississippi (Stader, 2007).
Problem Statement
Pre kindergarten education is a very important part of a child's life. It provides a child with the learning skills needed for future success. More programs are needed in Mississippi so that every child has the opportunity to gain the learning, development, and social skills they need to thrive in their own future. Since, no funds are provided by the state for mandatory pre kindergarten education, Mississippi has to rely on an incomplete educational system funded by local initiatives and private child care.
Thesis Statement
The access to pre-kindergarten learning provides greater success in the workforce, with higher earnings, more skills, and better training, thus, pre-kindergarten should be made mandatory in the state of Mississippi.
