Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. We must find a way to supply the growing world population with environmentally friendly, reliable electricity. In this context, efficiency in the generation and transmission of electricity is critically important. Siemens is developing innovative solutions for this purpose.

Our solutions, including power generating plants that release only low levels of greenhouse gases and set new standards for efficiency, wind turbines on land and sea, fuel cells and technologies for air pollution control, flexible power grids and reliable transmission systems with extremely low transmission losses, help reduce the consumption of raw materials and energy and therefore also lower the costs. Sustainable, affordable energy is good for the environment and good for consumers.

A great way to reduce CO2emissions, both on the side of producers and consumers, is to increase the efficiency of power generation, transmission and consumption. Siemens offers many useful technologies for climate protection, including extremely efficient coal-fired and combined-cycle power plants and a wide range of products and solutions for regenerative energy (hydroelectric and wind power, biomass power plants and geothermal energy plants). There is also great potential for reducing CO2 emissions in the process of transporting electric power.

The power transmission losses sustained in Germany alone equal the output of five power plants. High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems increase the efficiency of power transmission. In the future, superconductors could be used to cut power transmission losses in half, thereby reducing CO2emissions as well. Siemens has demonstrated the tremendous savings potential of this approach by developing the world's most efficient HVDC transmission system.

The best way to reduce industrial emissions is for companies to reduce their energy consumption. They can do this by taking advantage of the wide range of mutually compatible solutions offered by Siemens, which address the entire production ...
