Security of the data transmitted on a wireless network in a medical office

Introduction

Advancement in technology has led to increase in usage of information technology for medical application. The ease of use, reduced risk of infection, reduced risk failure, increased patient comfort level and increased mobility with low cost caused this advancement. New applications have helped health sector achieve efficiency. They are using portable devices such as heart rate monitors, spirometers and blood pressure monitor etc. Initially all these functions were handled manually with the wires attached to the patient. These wires had to be disconnected and reconnected again, which took a lot of time and caused inconvenience to the patient. Today, wireless technology provides a platform to connect to the medical center network and transmit the data to health data stores for monitoring and control. This data could also be used by Nurses and doctors to get information about patients through wireless devices.

Medical emergencies are now detected sooner and treated accordingly on time. After the introduction of wireless technology, health care system has significantly improved. Wireless technology could provide the best solution to the problems in which the record and data of the patient in necessary to acquire. Doctors now use hand-held devices that help them to solve problems very quickly and efficiently.

Apart from all the advantages, technology provides to the health care system, but it also brings problems for the health care system that needs to be dealt with. Health Care institutions have to face hardware and software issues as their cost of maintenance is very high. The use of wireless technology also raises the issue of confidentiality. These wireless communication devices contain a lot of confidential data of patients. If doctors losses their wireless communication devices, the data could be lost which is of utmost importance. In this paper, we will discuss the different technological advancement that has been made by Health Care system including the use of PDAs (wireless communicator) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The study would also include the problems faced in implementing new project and the security issues faced (Gil Ko & Lu, 2010).

Review of Literature

A lot of studies have been done on the use of technology in Medical health care sector. Ting-Ting Lee conducted a study on the adoption of Personal Digital Assistance as a part of change theory in medical health care centers. The study also discussed the issues faced in adopting new technology. Results revealed that PDAs are very handy to use and it improves the efficiency of Nurses, and health care system working, but Nurses and health care system has to face various issues in its adaptation. Nurses and Doctors require time to learn the usage of these PDAs and get accustomed to it. Tam Vu Ngoc also conducted a research on Medical Applications of Wireless ...
