The effect of single parent families on children and society

Abstract

A single parent family may be a woman with one or more children who was previously married but is now separated, divorced, or widowed, or someone with children who was never married. The marital status of a single parent with children has long been an important signifier of her social status, because motherhood or fatherhood was, and still often is, expected to occur within a religiously or legally sanctioned union. The effect of single parent families on children and society

Introduction

A lone mother (also known as a single parent), is a mother who cares for one or more children without the assistance of another parent in the home. The legal definition of lone parenthood or lone motherhood can vary internationally and occur for a variety of reasons. It can be voluntary for the parent, such as through divorce, adoption, or artificial insemination; or involuntary, such as through separation, death of a spouse, or a divorce that was not the lone parent's instigation. Fifty-five percent of lone mothers were once married, but statistics are more difficult to obtain for those who have cohabited or never lived together. Lone motherhood tends to be temporary, with four out of five lone mothers partnering, marrying, re-partnering, or remarrying within 10 years (Weinraub, 2002).

Thesis Statement

Children need love, authority, guidance and emotional support, and for this sometimes a single parent is more than enough.

Whether parents are separated, had an accident or simply did not want to take responsibility, the fact is that these children are not raised within a traditional family. While it is true that the role of these parents alone can be complicated and demanding, it does not necessarily mean that it is a tragedy or that the child will grow poorly. It is undeniable that if both parents not are present, the ...
