Situational and Transformational Leadership

Introduction

Leadership is the process of moving a group of people toward a specific outline and motivates them to work by choice; Successful leadership in the direction of movement of people achieves their interests in the long run. Leadership role is designed to influence others. Leadership can be explained as a procedure whereby one person affects, influence, or motivate others for the purpose of achieving goals and objectives related to the organization. The leader is the person who occupies a certain rank in the group, and is expected to perform well and remain consistent with that rank. A leader is the one who is expected to exercise an influential role in identifying and achieving the goals of the group. Thus effective leaders of modern organizations have realized the advantages of choosing a right leadership style which allows them to achieve their objectives in appropriate and effective manger (www.yourbusiness.azcentral.com). In this paper I am going to discuss two important leadership styles: Transformational and Situational leadership Style.

Transformational Leadership

The goal of transformational leadership is to change minds and hearts, broaden horizons and possibilities of organization and people, help that behavior that is consistent with their beliefs and motivation them to make changes permanent. Transformational leadership is based on internal motivation. Bass states that transformational leader is a leader who recognizes and accepts the transaction needs of potential followers, but tends to go on looking for and meeting the needs of Maslow's higher order.

Situational Leadership

Situational leadership style views leadership as a characteristic of the situation, rather than a specific type of person. At its core is an attractive idea that different circumstances require different forms of leadership. Situational leadership is based on maintaining a balance between two types of behavior that has a leader to suit the level of development of its staff. There are various leaders having more than one type of leadership style for the effectiveness of the organization. Statistics show that:

50% of managers use one style of leadership

30% of managers used two styles of leadership

19% of managers use three styles of leadership
