A Report on Teenagers' Attitude to Smoking

The census of Irish population indicated strong population growth in the year 2011 with a lower rate of life expectancy and poor health of the traveller community. The key trends identified include ensuring that services are provided in efficient and effective ways by targeting the scarce resources carefully. Statistics claimed that the health determinants, life style factors such as drinking, obesity and smoking would continue to be the issue of concern that might have the potential to jeopardize the health gains achieved in the recent years. Report on the trends for the year 2011 reflects that the effective management would mean decision making and planning based on the best possible evidences at all levels of the health system (www.dohc.ie).

This report is aimed at reviewing the secondary data available on the concerned topic either in the form of journals, articles or statistical reports. To understand the recent lifestyle of teenagers and their smoking habits, data was collected with in-depth analysis and presented recommendations for future studies in this field.

Global Scenario

Smoking is a preventable cause of death that eats thousands of precious lives each year. It is a habit that not only causes the death of its adductor but also puts the life of others at risk. The second-hand smokers are faced with serious and fatal health issues that might include the lung cancer and heart diseases (Anonymous, 2009, pp. 3).

In the European countries, frequency of smoking in women is less than men with the marked difference in the Eastern Europe. However, the prevalence of smoking among teenage girls is reaching the level as girls are likely to smoke as their counter partner (Anonymous, 2009, pp. 3).

The WHO states that low-income countries are the fastest growth places for tobacco usage and the underlying reasons are both the population growth and they are the target audience of the tobacco industry. Net results indicate that millions of people are becoming smoke addicted each year (Anonymous, 2009, pp. 3).

In the US, nearly half of the smoking users became regular smokers by the age 18 and more than 90% of the adult smokers started at the age of 21. The survey conducted in the year 2001 of the students of standard 9-12 reported that the smoke users at this stage were composed of nearly 30% of females and 38% of males. The main cause of teenage habit of smoking told was the advertisements that targeted the young audience (Anonymous, 2009, pp. 3).

Statistical Figures for Ireland

The life expectancy could be expressed as the years lived in quality health, and the rate of life expectancy has made remarkable rise in Ireland for the last decade.
