The Aztecs are a tribe, as asserted by their own legends, from Aztlan somewhere in the north of up to date Mexico. From this location, which they depart in about the 12th 100 years AD, they draw from their title as Aztecs. By the time they resolve afresh, after two centuries of migration and warfare, they are calling themselves by a distinct title - the Mexica.

This is the title they use when the Spaniards find out and conquer them in the 16th century. Their capital subsequent becomes renowned as Mexico City, and the whole district comes by the title of Mexico. It is either in the year 1325 or, more likely, 1345 that the Aztecs resolve on an uninhabited isle in Lake Tetzcoco (the distinction in designated day counts on how the Mesoamerican 52-year calendar cycle is integrated with the chronology of the Christian era) (Gold 2005). They call their town Tenochtitlan.

Their prospects in this location, where they are enclosed by foe tribes, appear as unpromising as those of the Venetians on their bleak lagoon isles a couple of centuries earlier. Like Venice, against all the odds, Tenochtitlan becomes the centre of a prevalent domain - and it does so much more quickly, extending over centered America inside a century. But different Venice, this is not a domain of trade. It is founded on the Aztecs' fierce cult of war. The patron deity of the Aztecs is Huitzilopochtli, god of conflict and emblem of the sun.
