Special Issues of the Computer

Introduction

The study is related to the information technology which particularly focuses on various crucial aspects that include green computing, MPEG applications and services, social computing and its applications, performance modeling, benchmarking and simulation of high performance computing systems, optimization for multi-agent systems, green mobile networking and communications and advanced computer technologies and applications in grid and cloud computing. All of these factors are important to study as these concerns provide vital knowledge about the computer.

Discussion

Green information technology can be thought of fundamentally as a new round of technological innovation and a set of organizational practices that green the IT infrastructure and/or that use IT to green other domains such as building and supply chains. Given the comprehensive scope, dimensions, and meanings of green IT, it should also be treated as a condensed concept that encompasses many pieces, including technological innovation, business strategy and philosophy, organizational conduct, relevant policy, and a movement. Green IT can benefit not only our economy by increasing energy efficiency while saving costs, but also our natural environment by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Edmonston, 2009, 12-38).

Green IT was born in a historical time when the negative environmental impact of significant IT growth, significant energy demands from IT and other domains, and the increased urgency of dealing with climate change were recognized, and the economic crisis and oil price increases were looming large. A couple of milestones, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) data center report to Congress and the formation of the Green Grid, also contributed to the emergence of green IT. Development of green IT has begun to reverse the negative impact of IT on the environment. Green IT is currently associated with different meanings and different priority goals by different parties. There is also a lack of a common standard and metrics to capture the comprehensive nature of green IT and to measure its success. These pose challenges to the development of green IT. At this stage, green IT should be treated as an emerging technological innovation and social phenomenon. Green Computing is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources. Computing is not currently very environmentally friendly. It is the study and practice of designing, manufacturing and associated subsystems such as monitors, printers and storage devices. As computing becomes increasingly pervasive, the energy consumption attributable to computing is climbing, despite the clarion call to action to reduce consumption and reverse greenhouse effects (Fisher, 2010, 7-16).

It is important to power-down the CPU and all peripherals during extended periods of inactivity; and try to do computer-related tasks during contiguous, intensive blocks of time, leaving hardware off at other times. Power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals such as laser printer according to need. Use liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors rather than cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors. As the commitment to reduce environmental impact and power consumption are becoming increasingly important objectives for organizations.

The “green” component in green IT is especially subject to different interpretations, depending on ...
