Sports Psychology Enhanced Performance

Introduction

According to the definition from American Psychological Associations, the association of participation linked with performance is based on the study of the factors of psychology, and other physical activities. Whereas, the Sport Psychology of the Federation of Europe defines it as “Sport psychology is concerned with the psychological foundations, processes, and Consequences of the psychological regulation of sport-related activities of one or several persons acting as the subject(s) of the activity. The focus may be on the Behaviour or on different psychological dimensions of human behaviour” (p. 221).

These definitions give a general idea of what Sport Psychology is all about?the other issues related to theories and interventions are less focussed, and the emphasis is more on population, and explains a meaning that practice of a general psychology when relates to the moving people gives a sense of Sport Psychology. This ultimately leaves an impact on general people that practicing of general psychology with an athletic style is sport psychology. Even the person belonging to sports filed also believes the same.

Researchers who have an interest in knowing about self-talk mainly focus on the relationship of it with (sporting) performance. There are many studies that support the use of self talk as one of the performance enhancing strategy. Few of the investigations have found out the detailed theoretical mechanism of finding that why and how self talk can enhance performance. The reason to this lack in understanding the importance of self talk in enhancing of performance could be the lack-ness of investigating the possible mechanism of performance increase. Where, self talk and self motivation is the set of skills that can improve your morale, your level of satisfaction, which ultimately results in outstanding performance through your own attitudes, your mental toughness and your resilience.

Discussion

From many aspects of performance relationship, one aspects of self-talk can describe self-talk- performance relationship is functional quality of itself' (Hardy. et al, 2001). The two Catagories of self-talk includes;

A.Constructional (cognitive) self-talk

B.Motivational self-talk

Theodorakis has examined in a series of four studies, that the hypothesis which is gained by performance would get expected when the task demands match the self-talk employed by any individual. Therefore, instructional self-talk which focuses on the technical elements of the performance is required to be much productive than motivational self-talk. This is when the task demands involve accuracy in work, timing and skills. Reversely, the beneficial effect which involves increased energy, focus, efforts, confidence etc., of motivational self-talk were also expected in enhancing the performance over constructional self-talk when the focus of task demand is on stamina and strength. The support was generated for their first prediction i.e, (study 1 and 2), support for second prediction was lacking (study 3rd and 4th).
