Business Feels the Consequences of the Uninsured Problem

Business Feels the Consequences of the Uninsured Problem

The decline in employer-sponsored health insurance has generated excessive health problems for employees and their families in the United States. These interminable troubles aggravated by the current economic decline. This issue is not only creating problem for the employees, but it also affects the employers as the in the absence of the worker the stakeholder will have to suffer the business. In the same way it will affect the overall productivity of the nation, as we can see from the statistics that have been provided in the case study that for the year 2000, a total of 1,664,000 individuals were away from work.

At the same time, controlled accessibility to essential health services has serious repercussions for the health of workers and their families. For example, due to the financial strain of medical expenditures, uninsured workers and their spouses are more likely to delay essential preventive health care, such as dental examinations, mammograms, pap tests, and prenatal services (which can also affect the health of newborns). Even intermittent lapses in insurance coverage for workers and their families can be related to failure of timely diagnosis of diseases. To make matters worse, uninsured families are likely to forgo urgently needed health care (Cawley and Simon, 2010).

Accordingly, these workers and their families have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases, disability, and even mortality, and this can place a heavy burden on families that have to provide home care for sick family members, especially children. The productivity of an employee can increased by insuring the uninsured employee, if only 20% of those workdays that lost due to the uninsured could have saved the over 160,000 workdays of the nation's productivity.
