Introduction

Stanhope is the character of the famous drama Journey's End, which is written by R.C. Sherriff. It is the story about the soldiers during the world war. The author R.C. Sheriff was also an officer during the World War 1. Journey's End reflected the war between Germany and England in 20th Century. R.C. Sheriff was a skilled dramatist as it reflected from this drama. He has reflected the picture in a convenient way. It makes us feel that we are with our fellow men and struggling to win the war. There are no indications that we live or not, and we are struggling for our survival.

Discussion

Osborne and Hardy are two officers in this drama. The start of drama is with the dialogues between these two officers. The dialogue was hilarious which made the people read this drama with strong focus. Stanhope is the young and brave leader which is leading the “C” company and he has all the guts to lead his company spectacularly. There is also a comedian in this play, Mason, who cracks jokes and put some comedy in the play. The entire play is revolving around the lives of the soldiers. The food they eat together, the way they live together, their training sessions, the problems occurred during the war, the tensions of life and death and any unpredicted event. The play ended with the dead of a unknown soldier Raleigh, who was admired by the Stanhope and thus came the end of play dreadfully. The play brought many points during the war such as cowardliness, heroism, friendship, sincerity, bravery, patriotism, humanity and tragic lost.

There are other characters too, which are not directly linked with the Stanhope but R.C Sherriff linked them with Stanhope indirectly in order to create interesting drama. These characters include the Raleigh sister, Madge and Hardy.

Stanhope was the commander of his company. He was very brave and talented that he became the leader of his company at very young age. We can predict the braveness of Stanhope from the dialogue of Osborne when he said that Stanhope came out from school, and he commanded the company at the age of 18. There are lots of troubles and hardships being a commander of the company. The commander has to control all the soldiers in the best way. He makes strategic plans in his mind. He does not want any of his soldiers to go waste or dead. Stanhope was leading the company using all his skills, but there were threats of death, coward officers and food. Instead of all that, he took this job and was serving brilliantly.

Hardy was the officer of other regiment, and he used to crack jokes about Stanhope and predicted like as he knew him well. He cracked a sentence about Stanhope, that how was that young little boy Stanhope, and he was sure that Stanhope might drinking like a fish.
