The Use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) in Al-Ain City Roads, Al Manaseer

Statistical Process Control (SPC) in Al-Ain City Roads, Al Manaseer

Introduction

Transportation system is the backbone of any economy. Well panned transport system is the critical factor for meeting diverse needs of commuting which include movement of people from one place to other, transporting of industrial material to markets. Envisioning the goal of Al-Ain City it requires an extremely exclusive transport network that will move people and materials efficiently through the Emirate, in a way that contributes to the quality of life for all residents, businesses, and visitors. Department of Transport manages the transportation system in Abu Dhabi. It has integrated contemporary process system to improve the performance of transportation channel. However, few areas still require considerable attention which includes controlling the risks associated with increase in transportation system scale.

Department of Transport is enduring momentous changes in urban transport process to ensure its structures and functions are effusively equipped to provide the efficient and effective transportation required to achieve Al-Ain City's goals. In 2010, DOT Department of Transport announced to conduct a study analysis to create Al Ain Area Surface Transport Master Plan (AASTMP) for meeting 2030 goals of the city, drawing the future of transport in Al Ain region in the coming 20 years. This system will be in lined with Plan Al Ain 2030 to improve the urban infrastructure of Al Ain region and enable the city and its suburbs to address the needs of expected population growth and urban expansion.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods have significant implications in the Transport Management System for the city (Balnaves, 2007). The DOT dept. needs to ensure the efficiency of system by analyzing the weak parts in the system. SPC is used extensively to identify the deviational causes and reasons that are different from natural variation causes in a process system. Although it does not provide the configurative solution of the problems identified in the system however, it enables the analyst to accurately address the issues by examining different aspect of quality control. Department of Transportation has divided its process structure in multi-phased process which includes inception, identification, and design of instantaneous traffic congestion solutions, safeguarding of transport corridors, classification, and evaluation of transport options, and modelling of transport alternatives (Balnaves, 2007).

Research Measurements

Transport problems are increasing greatly in Al-Ain especially in areas which are congested and have high pedestrian rate. Al Manaseer which is one of the hottest spot in Al-Ain City is renowned for accidents as statistics show. DOT Department conducted a study in 2010 to examine the main causes of accidents in the area. This study revealed significant results which will be discussed in the later part of text. SPC method has great implication in understanding the sequential changes in the accidents as it will enable the Department of Transport to address the problem subsequently (Corbin, 2008). It will enable the DOT to make changes accordingly ...
