Story Theory: A Critical Review

The conjecture of considerately embracing story is a structure directed to lead the patient-provider dealings by identifying the management of illness/wellness in the background of a story and assisting the patient to discover the connotation through storytelling. Author has mostly used the language: “[story theory] proposes connecting self-in-relation through nurse-person intentional dialogue to create ease.” (Smith & Liehr, 2008, p.175).

(Smith & Liehr, 2008, p.175) observed that paying attention towards the patient as they speak regarding their day was a basic component of their study. Liehr explains: “When a nurse and a patient connect in a deliberate conversation in which they mutually disclose the health story of the patient, the patient is more comfortable and can get consolation in recalling and sharing.

Internal Criticism

Adequacy

There was an ambiguity in the first few editions of the theory regarding the later publications in which there was a more brief expression of what the theory was: “a middle range nursing theory that describes story as a narrative happening of connecting with self-in-relation through intentional nurse-person dialogue to create ease” (Smith, 2005, p. 273). Author's conjectures are clearly expressed when definitional provisions are not apparent. For example, the assumption by the authors as they pointed out that the primary description of the story theory indicates a dynamic process, not a linear one. In addition it was also argued that caring commitment in the course of the story describes the communications between nurse and person.

However, modest theory-based investigation has been carried out so far. A study by Williams' (2007) on informal caregivers and Jolly, Weiss, and Leihr's research in 2007 on adolescent voice revealed that there is a room for story theory in the nursing literature.

Clarity

The three key notions i.e. concerning with self-in-relation, deliberate conversation, and crafting easiness are sufficiently described through the internal and internal resources of the nursing field (Smith & Liehr, 2003, p.170). Regrettably, all of these key concepts include numerous elements and several terms that are likely to be unusual to the amateur or even to a nurse. For instance, reflective awareness and flow have been adopted from preceding studies, including the study of Jon Kabat-Zinn (1994), work of Abraham Maslow (1967) in humanistic psychology, and flow concept of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990) (see Smith & Liehr, 2003, p.172-173). These terminologies fit in the nursing structure due to the reason that these terms are related with each other in the storytelling/attentive listening model, as it is related to the health processes.

Consistency

Definitions are steady all through, and similar terminologies are elaborated in consecutively more basic manner. Key concepts are constantly established prior to the minor notions, and these terminologies are homogeneously ordered throughout in order to present the big picture of the concept to the reader. The relationship of the nurse and the person by author is a good example of consistent utilization of distinctive terminologies. Despite the fact that the authors deviated from conventional nursing terms by saying “person” as a substitute ...
