Introduction

Mayo Clinic is a non-profit social organization and a global leader in healthcare, education and research for the masses. It was in 1889, by Dr. Mayo, Stinchfield, Graham, Plummer, Millet, Judd and Balfour. Its headquarters, the Mayo Medical School and its research departments are located in Rochester, Minnesota. It also has hospitals and clinics in Jacksonville (Florida) and Scottsdale and Phoenix (Arizona). It also has a chain of small clinics and hospitals in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

SWOT

Strengths

For the strategic performance management strengths are the key forces for a company as it identifies and help organizations to move towards the goals and objectives that were previously set by the management which ultimately affect the overall efficiency of the organization like in the case of Mayo Clinic. The physicians' compensation does not depend on the number of patients served or tests ordered, allowing them to focus on one priority: the patient's needs. It ensures quality service being provided. Being a non-profit organization, its primary aim is not to earn revenue; instead the focus is on constant and quality health care of the public. Mayo's national three-site cancer center built to reduce the burden of cancer patients also acts as its strength. Telemedicine is used at Mayo Clinic to ensure medical expertise is available to patients, along with doctors, anywhere in the world. Telemedicine includes, the Internet, Smart phones, and stoke robots. It also provides risk-free patient-centered care. Mayo Clinic is a continuous learning organization.

Weaknesses

Mayo Clinic is a large organization, and it may be impossible to keep track of expenses, especially when it is a non-profit organization. Certain lack of communication between the various units, which are stretched over three states.

Increasing health-care demand leads to occupy spaces in customer service, which is not appropriate. In 2010, over 1,050,000 patients were catered by the organization; such increasing large number may delay the process of quick and prompt attention, due to the large number of patients that must be addressed.

Opportunities

In addition, from the perspective of the strategic performance management, following are the factors or elements that the Mayo Clinic should concentrate on, as they consider as the core factors which guide a health-care provider organization in moving towards the goals, which ultimately affect the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization (Meyer, 2010). Mayo Clinic should apply the medical advances developed by the university and specialists working in the hospital. It should also focus on developing area of pensions to increase their own income.

Threats

What makes an organization strong is the ability to identify possible threats within its operational base in strategic performance management, the threats to Mayo Clinic could be in the form of government policies, new advanced researches, competitive pressures, new entrants, explosive increase in patients, and new viruses and diseases.
