Book review

When Martin Luther King, Junior was preparing himself for the Birmingham Campaign in 1963, he prepared the final copy for “Strength to Love”, a part of his most well known works that was be published later the same year. He originally submitted the book in 1957 to Melvin Arnold, who was working as the head of Religious Books Department in Harper & Brothers'. Melvin really liked Martin Luther King, Junior's work but despite King's best intentions and Arnold's repeated urging for a first copy. However, King did not released the final version until the mid of 1962. Martin Luther King, Junior started his work on the book when he was put into jail in July 1962, during that time he spent a lot of time on preparing the drafts for the sermons like “Loving your enemies”, “Love in Action”, “Shattered Dreams” and even after his release he continued to work on his book. Then he sent his the first copy of his book in the same year which included the sermons which had King's standards including “Paul's Letter to American Christians'' and ''What Is Man?''.

When the book started selling at a good pace, the publishers praised the effort of Martin Luther King, Junior. However, when the book was being edited the editors, Arnold and Charles Wallis, removed many famous phrases of King. The assessment of King on topics such as the ugly practices of our nation,'' his call that capitalism must be transformed by ''a deep-seated change,'' and his description of colonialism as ''evil because it is based on a contempt for life'' were removed from the book. Many of the statements written by King in his book, which were against the military and war were deleted from the book. For Example, in his original sermon “Transformed Nonconformist” he described the early Christians as totally against the war. Statements like these were missing from the book.

In his book, Martin Luther King, Junior presents number of his sermons on topics ranging from communism and Christianity to the famous Indian Independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, whose own nonconformity and nonviolent civil disobedience campaign influenced King's own methods. ...
