Introduction

This paper would seek to develop an educational plan for the Sankoh family in order to provide them with an understanding of the perils of stress and the inability to manage stress. The plan would also look to educate the family about the consequences it could have on the relationships in the house. Since the Sankoh family comes from a poor background in North Africa, it would require an understanding of the issues that the family is faced. The Sankoh family has been facing various issues recently. The financial worries of the household are one of the major issues that they are faced with. To add to the qualms, the family found out that their eldest son is gay. This has led to outrage from the father who blames his wife for not managing the children while he was away earning for the family (Allender & Spradley, 2001).

The objectives of the educational plan is to provide all the members of the family with an understanding as to what stress is, how can and should they try to manage it and how to respond to stresses they face within the family. The plan would look to focus on the cognitive aspect of stress management by accomplishing the following;

Defining stress and how is it caused

What the factors or reasons behind the stress in their lives

Providing guidelines as to how the family can use various techniques to cope with stress

The second part would look on the affective aspect of coping with stress by highlighting the importance of managing stress in a group discussion.

Establishing Goals and Objectives

The idea behind the education plan is to make the family aware of the dangers associated with mishandling stress. The first and foremost goal is to inform the Sankoh's of the techniques through which they can handle stress individually and as a family. This would include educating on methods such as considering an evaluation of their lifestyle. By analyzing their lifestyle, the family would be able to find out the root cause that is resulting in stress among the members.

By talking to one another, the family would be able to discuss what their grievances toward each other. This implies the application of the communication strategy. The goal is to make the family talk over their problems and work together to find a solution.

Another objective of the plan is to create a positive environment in the house. Since stress in a family can influence the manner in which members behave, it is essential to know what behavior would be appropriate. The next goal of this plan is to enable members of the family to introspect. The plan would empower individuals to focus on their behaviors and efforts in managing stress in the family (McKenzie et al, 1999).
