Factors Impacting the Success of the 2012 Olympic Games

Introduction

The East of England has identified its aspirations for securing impacts flowing from the London 2012 Olympic Games. These aspirations have been collected through regional events on 9 December 2005 and 5 April 2006 and through discussions and written contributions from interested parties and organisations in the East of England.

Effective coordination and communication will be necessary to achieve success, and it could also be a legacy benefit to the region. Linking with, and influencing, London programmes; as well as achieving effective cross regional and sub regional working and networks will be important in maximising benefits to the East of England. The Games provide an opportunity to develop cross-regional structures that can be used to drive the development of the region in the key themes post the Games.

Maximising legacy benefits will be the overarching key success measure. Forward planning and partnership working across the private and public sectors will be essential to maximise a myriad of economic, social, community, organisational and cultural opportunities and minimising risks to the East of England (Feddersen et al., 2007).

The following targets define success from the 2012 Olympic Games for the East of England:

Put the East of England on the Map

Grow the number of international tourists to the East of England by 3% per annum, and grow business tourists by 3% per annum. Use sport and culture to position the region: i.e. showcase the region through the Games events at Broxbourne and Weald Country Park, and through cultural events related to the 2012 Games.

Develop the East of England's Businesses
