Summary: Chapter 5- Flexibility and Low-Back Health

The chapter five of this book explains flexibility, which is exceptionally significant to overall fitness and wellness of a person. Flexibility aids in the smooth performance of our everyday activities. Flexibility itself is a very flexible state to achieve. It can be achieved by regularly indulging into stretching activities. However, flexibility is also joint specific. A good flexibility in a joint does not indicate good flexibility in the other joint. It has two basic types: Static Flexibility- the capability of holding to an extended position, at one end or point, in a joint's full range of motion, and Dynamic Flexibility- ability of moving a joint through its range of motion with a little resistance. There are many factors that affect static flexibility, which include: the capability of tolerating stretched muscles, joint structure, the rigidity of muscles and tendonsthat are attached to the joint. Dynamic flexibility is dependent upon factors such as: coordination of muscles, strength and resistance to movement. Flexibility can be improved by applying the following FITT principle: Frequency—how often to stretch, Intensity—how far to stretch, Time—how long to stretch, Type—which stretching exercises to perform.
