Sustainable Development of Coal Mining Industry



Executive Summary

This paper has focused on the sustainability development of coal mining industry in Serbia. The societies in the transition phase generally focus on specific aspects of sustainability which are critical to their effective and efficient transition. The difficulty of the process of transition is described as radical changes that occur in the field of technological change, privatisation, competitiveness and business strategy, development of infrastructure and markets while keeping the well being of all involved and interested groups and environmental issues. At present, many of the mining organisations in Serbia have the privatisation process which is still active. In this paper, we have examined how the factors which are mentioned before are incorporated to these strategies and in the end; we have provided some recommendations for their more successful application of the STMD principles.

Introduction

This paper will analyse the sustainable development in the coal mining industry of Serbia in detail. The paper will discuss the environment issues at the local and international level and then will provide with some of the alternatives to be implemented to the project to achieve sustainability. It will also present the difficulties and challenged faced by the mining industry of the country in order to achieve sustainable development objectives.

Concept of economic activity has the concept of sustainability which has always been implicated in various forms. This refers both to the cooperative interaction of the employers with their customers and employees, to the avoidance of aggressive competition and the wise restriction of consumption as well as the art of dealing with limited resources and the need not harming the living beings. Now, we as humans should make concerted and strong modification of the development of direction where the planet knows how to maintain the needs of the humankind. This integrated and concerted change and action of the direction may be considered to be the sustainable development.

There is an argument by some of the people that the finite resources such as coal do not have any part in the sustainable development. This point does not look on the ability of substituting one resource for the other. Hence, it can be said that the usage of coal can be consistent with the sustainability if it provides with new capital and the opportunities for the future, for example, new technologies, infrastructure and the new knowledge.

A risk associated with the use of coal might degrade the natural capital, for example, the environment to an irreversible or unacceptable level, leads to the unsustainable development. From the perspective of the sustainable development, it will be informative to look at the importance of coal in the beginning of industrial society.
