Abstract

Aim

This paper is a systematic review protocol to identify, critically appraise and synthesize the evidence relating to midwives' job satisfaction and morale in relation to quality of care.

Background

My proposed systematic review is to look at the particular aspect of midwives' job satisfaction and morale, and its effect on quality of care. Reviews conducted purport to examining midwives' job satisfaction and quality of care as separate subjects, but lack of reviews identified specifically examining the link between midwives' job satisfaction and morale and quality of care.

Methods/Design

The objectives of the research study is to analyze and explore the impact of midwives' job satisfaction in relation to quality of care; to explore how morale in midwives affects the quality of care; and to determine any motivating factors which can increase job satisfaction and morale among midwives, promoting increased quality of care. During the course of the study different avenues of qualitative and quantitative research utilized. For the research purposes, different medical journal articles and article reviews (not more than 15 years old) were critically analyzed and explored by keeping the following research parameters such as (female, midwife age between 19-50 years and the like). The key words used for this research included literature analysis of midwives' job satisfaction, quality care in midwives, job satisfaction and impact on the quality of care, job satisfaction among midwives and protocols of quality of care.

The Department of Health publication Framing the Nursing and Midwifery Contribution; driving up the quality of care (2008), states: 'The quality of midwifery care in the NHS must reach the first-class standards of excellence to which the profession aspires and which women and their families expect' (P. 10).

Rowley (1998) professed that women have a right to expect high-quality care from their chosen professional, but there must be guidelines and policies ingrained to promote and assess not only satisfaction of care, but also quality. Women who have used the professional services of midwives have reported increased satisfaction and good relationship with their care provider that resulted in a safe and healthy birth experience ...
