Job costing

Job alignment costing is basic to managerial accounting. It disagrees from Process costing in that the flow of charges is traced by job rather than of by process. Process costing is utilised when the goods are more homogeneous in nature. In a job costing scheme, charges are built up by job. For a usual job, direct material and direct work are followed at their genuine values. These are noted and followed until the job is completed. Overhead is directed either by utilising a rate founded on direct work hours or by utilising an Activity Based Costing (ABC) cost driver (Sullivan, 2003, 16). In either case, one time overhead is supplemented, the total cost for the job can be determined. Upon culmination, the charges are moved out of Work in Process to Finished Goods (Cost of Goods Sold for service industries). Job costing is the method of working out the work and components cost for each job in a methodical way, and then utilising this data to conceive an extract for the customer (Wichelhaus, 2002, 3381-5).
