Introduction

In the story Marcus showed the difficulties that Kathleen went through.  It told the details of her life from what they once were to how they changed.  Kathleen experienced a change in her life that many people go through.  Before they realized that they were different and the life they had was not something they wanted, they had already began a life.  It was in a time when being gay and lesbian was not accepted by many.  It took a lot of courage for Kathleen to tell her family how she felt and what she was going to do.  I can't say I know what she is going through because I have never experienced the discrimination that she did for being who she was.  I know as being straight that I won't be faced with the things that she experienced.  Gay and lesbians got through harder times than most and it is unfair to those who have to go through it.(Marcus,1992)

Once Kathleen dealt with resentment from her family including her children, she slowly moved on to another area.  Her girlfriend and her began to make a life in Colorado.  Here Kathleen showed how she was committed to the gay and lesbian community.  She has become a driving force with the community in speaking about the things she went through.  I feel that her struggle has encouraged me to make the most of any situation I am put in.  It makes me feel that I can overcome any hard obstacle that may come in my way.  If one woman can go through her father pulling her off the front steps of her childhood home and dragging her down the street to become a very influential woman with every person ...
