Introduction

The Color Purple was published in 1982 and is considered one of Alice Walker's famous novels. For the novel, which chronicles the struggle of several black women in rural Georgia in the first half of the twentieth century, Walker won the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award. In 1985 Steven Spielberg film based on the novel was released to wide audiences and major awards (White, 2005).

Plot summary

In The Color Purple, the story is told through letters. The sentences just out of the letters are the first two: "You're not better not to tell anyone, but God would kill his mother." Silenced forever, the main character, fourteen, Celie writes letters to God. Her father raped her, and she has two children, a girl and a boy, who "Pa" turned away from her. Celie's mother has died and Pa looks too much like her younger sister, Nettie.

He wants to marry Nettie but Dad refuses because Mr. Scandals s' with Shug Avery, a blues singer. Celie manages to get a picture of Shug and falls for her. Finally, Mr. agrees to take place Celie Nettie because dad offers a cow.

Once in charge, Mr. Celie blows all the time. Meanwhile, Pa Nettie escapes and comes to the Lord's house, but when she refuses, he throws it, Celie Nettie information to ask their new daughter Olivia "mother" for help. Nettie promises to write, but his letters never arrive.

One day, Shug Avery comes to town, but the man does not have Celie to her. Harpo, the son of Mr.__'s, married Sophia, a woman brave, strong, and when he complains that Sophie did not obey him. Celie advises Harpo to beat her.

Shug is sick and the Lord takes her home. To the surprise of Celie, she called Mr. by his first name, Alberto. Celie love and care to better Shug, Shug begins to compose a new song.

Sofia leaves Harpo eventually that becomes their home in a juke joint and asks Shug to sing. Shug invites Celie presentation. Shug sings "A good man is hard to find" and then the new piece, called "Celie's Song." Celie discovers that she is important to someone.

Before leaving, Shug says it will ensure that the master does not beat Celie again. She also teaches Celie to love herself. At the time when Sofia returns with a new man and his six children instead of five, Harpo has a girlfriend he calls little squeak. Sofia and Squeak hit each other in the juke joint, and finally left Sofia.

The wife of the mayor of Sofia is in town with the kids and asks Sofia to be her maid. Sophie responds: "Of course not" and hits the mayor when the protests. She was arrested, beaten and left in jail. Meanwhile, Squeak is dealing with children in Sofia. When she finds one of guards is his uncle Sofia, Squeak tries to save Sophie.
