Introduction

The recent trend of 3D movies has resulted in a huge boom for the entertainment industry in general, and the film industry in particular, and the audience has taken to this emerging and upcoming trend in a big way. The film industry has benefited a lot from the proliferation of this trend and 3D movies are very popular with cinemagoers all over the world.

However, it is pertinent to note that the trend of 3D movies has led doctors and sections of the audience to question the impact of 3D movies on the health of some viewers who may not be able to enjoy the “3D experience” due to various health related reasons. There have been many reported cases of sickness as a result of viewing 3D movies, and neurologists advise certain individuals not to watch 3D movies, since they believe such movies could trigger seizures. An example would be the birth scene in "Breaking Dawn: Part One" of the Twilight series, where Bella gives birth; the visual effects with strobe light-like flash lights and the way it was edited almost caused seizures to some viewers (Golokhov, 2011).

Discussion

There have been certain measures put in place in order to address these health hazards, such as warning viewers beforehand about the perils of 3D, in addition to advising viewer discretion. However, such warnings do not seem to be working for certain viewers, who appear to be perfectly normal, and the black, red and white lights in the birthing scene in "Breaking Dawn: Part One" of the Twilight series, caused seizures to healthy individuals in cases reported from Utah and Sacramento, California (ABC News, 2011).
